Lakeside Palace Hotel Hanoi : A Luxury Budget Hotel for Less than Php 2k
Following my Hanoi posts, I will be talking about our experience in Lakeside Palace Hotel, a luxury budget hotel in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Hanoi is included in the list of top travel destinations in Asia so it is not a surprise that there are plenty of hotel and hostels in this charming city. Prior to our trip, I was searching for that one particular hotel that will suit our budget and at the same time will not compromise comfort and convenience. Blog posts and hotel reviews were limited so I focused in reading reviews and looking at hotel images in different booking providers.
Good thing, Lakeside Palace Hotel caught my attention due to its accessibility and beautiful family rooms. I immediately reserved a room for our Hanoi trip when Booking.com offered discounted rates last July (3 months before our travel dates).
The biggest factor in choosing hotel accommodation in Hanoi, Vietnam is the location. The nearer the hotel in Hoan Kiem Lake, the better. Simply because this lake is situated in the center of Hanoi and is accessible to most tourist attractions.
Lakeside Palace Hotel is strategically located in Hang Hanh Street right next to the famous Hoan Kiem Lake. The location is actually very convenient because it is within walking distance to most tourist places such as the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, Ngoc Son Temple, Ly Thai To Park, and shopping streets in the Old Quarter.
The surrounding area of the hotel have many shops, travel agencies, restaurants, street food stalls, 24/7 stores and cafes. The hotel’s location is undeniably perfect for family tourists.
The hotel lobby is spacious with a seating area/couch for guests. Above the couch, there are five wall clocks which shows the time differences from different countries.
Staff at the reception desk are always smiling, very accommodating and friendly. They also offer tour assistance for day trips and tour packages like Perfume Pagoda Day Tour, Hoa Lu & Tam Coc Tour, Halong Bay Full Day Tour, and Hanoi City Tour.
Rooms & Rates
I booked our room via BOOKING.COM because it requires no prepayment. Meaning, payment is directly at the hotel in their local currency upon check in.
Since our arrival in Hanoi is past midnight, I thought of getting a small room for our first day and booked a Superior Room for $26. The superior room has 1 King Size bed with the following amenities: flat screen TV, free WiFi and free breakfast for two. Prior to our trip, I emailed the hotel and inquired about my daughter’s breakfast because for this specific room, free breakfast is for two persons only. Ms. Annie (the one who gave prompt response to my inquiries) said that they will not charge for my daughter’s breakfast on our first day.
For our second and third night, I reserved a bigger room- the Family Room with city view. This type of room is suitable for family and groups and has the following bed configuration: 1 Twin Bed and 1 King Bed. Complimentary buffet breakfast for three (3) was also included and the room has free WiFi. I was able to book this room for $42 per night.
We arrived around 3:00 AM and found the hotel in complete darkness. They immediately welcomed us and opened the lights as soon as we entered the lobby. I showed the printed hotel reservation and explained that we will be staying in the Superior Room for our first night and will transfer to a bigger room on our 2nd and 3rd day. The receptionist smiled and said that they are assigning us to the family room right away. Meaning, they upgraded our first night stay from Superior Room to Family Room for FREE! Lucky us!
I would also like to note that unlike other hotels, they did not demand the payment upon check in. Instead, they led us to our rooms so that we can rest first. This hotel knows what a great customer service is. They know how to anticipate the needs of travelling guests with children and elderly especially when check in time/arrival is at dawn.
We were led to Room #301 which is conveniently located near the lifts.
Here’s a picture of our beautiful room. The family room with one king bed and one twin bed is very spacious. We have more than enough space to move around. The beds are comfortable and not hard, and the sheets and pillowcases smells clean. Sufficient quantity of soft pillows were also provided.
Please excuse our bags, I would like to emphasize how roomy the room was. You might think that the flat screen TV was mounted in the wrong place/wall but it did not bother us a bit. It has cable channels which is perfect if you have kids. There’s also a mini fridge where we stored some of the food and drinks we bought outside.
The small coffee table is complete with tea and coffee making facilities with free complementary bottled water for three persons, Vietnamese coffee and fruit flavored tea sachets, an electric kettle, drinking glasses and cups. This is the spot where my mother likes the most. She’s a huge fan of hotels with coffee making facilities. Any hotel with complete goodies like this, she will surely love.
There is also a dresser near the sitting area and coffee table spot. The room has a large window.
The description says this type of room provides a city view. Here’s the actual view from the window.
On the left side of the larger bed, there’s a wooden closet for our clothing. Hangers were provided as well as room slippers. Inside the wooden cabinet, there’s a safe box for valuables.
Locks were provided for the closet but we were not able to use the keys because they were stuck in the key lock.
My daughter was looking forward to their bathroom with bath tub and it did not disappoint. The bathroom is very spacious and clean, the hot and cold shower is perfectly fine and complete toiletries were provided. Hair dryer is also available (not shown in the picture).
My only issue about the bathroom is the floor, because every time someone uses the shower, it gets wet all over and the type of flooring makes it very slippery when wet. It’s more on the safety issue especially for kids and elderly and I do hope that they will consider providing anti-slip matting.
Complimentary breakfast is served in the hotel’s on site restaurant located on the 8th floor. The dining area is quite small but with sufficient number of tables for hotel guests.
This is the spot where you can eat your breakfast while enjoying the view of the famous Hoan Kiem Lake.
I leaned on the glass window and took this shot. Can you see the Turtle Tower and the main road with the street lights?
As for the food, buffet spread for the free breakfast is very generous which includes fruits, breads, jams, salads, vegetables, porridge, dumplings, eggs, fried rice, pancakes, etc. Main viands varies everyday. You can toast your bread or you can request some eggs and have them prepared depending on how you want them (fried, scrambled, sunny side up). This kind of fulfilling and generous breakfast is what we all want, don’t we?
We really enjoyed the complimentary breakfast. The good breakfast selections offered by Lakeside Palace Hotel actually exceeded our expectations.
Staff assigned in the restaurant were commendable as well. They are quick to attend to hotel guests and even with the language barrier, they were courteous and friendly.
If you want to try something Vietnamese for breakfast, you can request for a bowl of Pho (Vietnamese noodle soup).
Airport service/airport shuttle
To avoid the hassle of dealing with taxi scammers and for our convenience since our arrival in Hanoi is past midnight, I booked the hotel’s airport pick up service thru email and provided our flight number and arrival time in Noi Bai International Airport. I also requested for a cautious and reliable driver because I have read horror stories of drivers picking up hotel guests who almost experience heart attack while on the road because of reckless driving.
Our departure time (supposedly) in Manila is 10:15 PM and arrival time in Hanoi is 12:30 AM. But for some reasons, our flight was delayed and we left Manila around 11:30 pm which means we will be arriving in Vietnam around 2:00 AM. During our flight, I was nervously thinking and feeling paranoid that the driver will leave the airport without us because they were not informed that our flight was behind schedule. I kept on thinking every worst possible scenario and alternative plans if the airport service driver did not show up. Imagine my relief when I saw a man in the arrival area holding a paper with my name on it. The driver patiently waited for us for almost 2 hours. Ms. Annie also said that their assigned drivers for airport pick up were advised to wait for the hotel guests at the airport. Getting the hotel’s airport service is really a good idea and is highly recommended for family travelers.
The journey from the airport to the hotel is around 45 minutes to 1 hour. And as requested, the driver who picked us up drove us safely to the hotel.
Rates for the airport pick up service are as follows:
$18 for 4 seater car/one way
$22 for 7 seater car/one way
Rate for the airport service from hotel to airport is $15
Currency Exchange On Site
Lakeside Palace Hotel accepts any currency as payment and allows currency conversion. It is where I had my remaining US Dollars converted to Vietnamese Dong and my leftover dong to US Dollars before going back to the Philippines.
To complete our touristy experience in Hanoi, we decided to try the massage services in the hotel’s spa center located on the lower level of the building. We availed the foot massage which cost VND 200,000 ($9 or approx. Php 463) for 1 hour. The massage is very relaxing and the three massage therapists knows what they were doing. I just find it pricey for an hour massage compared to the rates of foot massage here in the Philippines.
