Marikina Food Trip : Modan Yaki

Me and my friends decided to meet up and have dinner at Modan Yaki, a fairly new Japanese restaurant along Gil Fernando Avenue in Marikina.

The restaurant was almost empty when we arrived but after an hour, people started coming and the restaurant was full and busy until the time we left. If you want to avoid the crowd, I suggest that you go there early and avoid peak hours.Modan Yaki

Modan Yaki is simple with beautiful murals on the wall and other Japanese decors. It looks small on the outside but they have an extension of the restaurant with more tables and chairs at the back.

Here’s their menu which I requested online.

We ordered the following for sharing:

Modan Yaki Marikina

Pittsua, Japanese for pizza. We ordered the Tamiko (Php 245)  with kani, shrimp, cream cheese, Nori flakes and tempura crumbs. You have to roll the pizza with alfalfa and arugula to enjoy its distinct taste. Actually, among all the dishes that we have ordered, this is our favorite. Highly recommended!

Tebasaki or Chicken Wings in Sweet Chili Sauce and Aoli Dip ( Php 119 for 6 pcs). We like their chicken wings, not too sweet and not too spicy.

Crazy Cali Maki (8 pcs for Php 145). The rice is not sticky enough.

Wagyu Cubes (one stick for Php 95).  This one’s not included in the menu but listed on the menu board. Taste is okay according to my friends.

Sizzling Takoyaki (5 pcs,  Php 125). Soft and bursting with flavor. However, we noted that the tiny bits of seafood inside (not sure if it’s octopus or squid) are tough to chew.

Tantanmen Ramen (Php 195). Not a fan of spicy food but their Tantanmen Ramen is also good, with just the right level of spiciness and flavor.

Note: For Ramen lovers, you may also try their unlimited refill of ramen and soup which is priced at Php 280.

Coffee Jelly Php 80 each. The perfect dessert! The presentation is unique. We like that they incorporated other flavors in their Coffee Jelly to give it a twist ( our guess is cinnamon powder). This one’s also a must try.

What we like

  • strategic location
  • inexpensive as compared to other Japanese restaurants nearby
  • They have a lot to offer on their menu.
  • quick service
  • free tea

What we don’t like

  • They need to improve more on their customer service. We had to request for tissue papers which are not available on our table. When they served our orders of Coffee Jelly, they forgot to gave us small spoons so we had to ask again.

Overall, Modan Yaki is a good place to hang out with friends with good food and good prices. Their Tantanmen Ramen, Tamiko (highly recommended), Tebasaki and Coffee Jelly are so good and worth raving for. Would definitely want to try the other varieties of their Pittsua and other dishes on our next visit.
